How REYATAZ Fights HIV
REYATAZ is a protease inhibitor, a type of HIV medication that prevents HIV-infected cells from making new copies of the virus. Protease inhibitors work by disrupting the normal function of HIV protease, an enzyme necessary for HIV to reproduce itself.
In combination therapy, REYATAZ can help reduce the levels of HIV in the blood (also known as "viral load") to undetectable.* Lower viral load levels mean less virus destroying CD4+ cells.

How HIV Attacks the Immune System
CD4+ cells are an important part of your immune system. Sometimes, they are called "T-cells." These cells lead the attack against infections from viruses and bacteria.
REYATAZ is a protease inhibitor that prevents HIV from copying itself correctly.
When a person has HIV, the cells most often infected with HIV are healthy CD4+ cells. The virus uses the CD4+ cells to create more copies of itself. As it multiplies, HIV destroys CD4+ cells. Left untreated, HIV can overpower your immune system.
Healthcare providers measure CD4+ cell count as part of your HIV treatment. If your CD4+ cell count goes down, it is a sign that the immune system is being weakened and the likelihood of illness will be higher.
Once-daily REYATAZ can help raise your CD4+ levels and lower your viral load to undetectable.* Ask your doctor if REYATAZ is right for you.
REYATAZ does not cure HIV or help prevent passing HIV to others.
* "Undetectable" is defined as a viral load that is too low to be picked up by a particular test. Typically, it is a viral load of less than 400 or 50 copies per milliliter (depending on test used).
